Acumentrics Wins Navy SBIR for Portable Power Unit

WESTWOOD, Mass., November 30, 2006 – Acumentrics Corporation, a leading developer of solid-oxide fuel cells and uninterruptible power supplies for the distributed generation market, announced today that it has been awarded an SBIR grant from the Navy. The goal of the grant is to develop a lightweight Marine Portable Power Unit (MPPU) that can serve as both an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and a battery charger.

Military missions involve the use of equipment that requires small batteries for power where AC grid power is unavailable. Those batteries need a recharging station. There is also a need for a high-quality power output device for sensitive communications equipment. Acumentrics project will design a product to meet those needs. Making such a combined device lightweight will make it much more useful in quick-moving military situations.

Acumentrics has 10 years’ experience making and selling rugged power supply and conditioning units for harsh environments. It leads the industry in the ability to accept a wide voltage range with high variance and generate clean, conditioned AC or DC power, while withstanding the worst conditions. Its unique Flow Through design maximizes internal cooling while sealing electronic components from the damaging effects of moisture, dust, and other contaminants. Acumentrics also has been developing a unique, durable, fuel-flexible fuel cell technology for six years and has 30 generators operating in the field, ranging from 1-10 kilowatts in size.

”This latest contract award allows us to begin to move our products to the cutting edge of performance”, said Gary Simon, President & CEO of Acumentrics. “We want to provide our Marines with a compelling advantage in power supply electronics—the best modern technology has to offer.”

Over the past decade, the Company has sold over 40,000 rugged UPS units. Customers include all branches of the U.S. military, the oil and gas industry, city subway systems, and critical water facilities. Acumentrics’ rugged UPS products work in extreme heat and cold, in wet and dry conditions, after severe shaking and shock, and even in blowing dirt and sand.
